FAQ – Planning for your dream vacation

Visas

All passport holders other than South African passports must have a 30-day tourist visa and your passport must be valid for 6 months after leaving Mozambique. SA passport holders do not require a visa but must have their passports stamped at the order.

Visas can be arranged at the border post at Komatipoort (South Africa) if traveling overland, and at Maputo and Inhambane airports. However, we recommend that you obtain a visa at your nearest embassy in advance to avoid delays at immigration.

Currency

The local currency is the Mozambique Metical or Meticais. South African Rand and US Dollars are also accepted at some establishments but usually at poor exchange rates. Traveler’s cheques are not accepted locally.

There is a bank just 2km outside of Tofo and three banks in Inhambane which is 20km from Tofo and these all have ATM machines that accept a wide range of international cards including VISA and Mastercard.

What to Bring

The temperature in Tofo rarely drops below 20°C, even at night, so opt for light clothes, tshirts, shorts and sandals. During the winter months you might need a sweatshirt or longsleeve tshirt to keep the chill off. During January and February and also a little in June and July, you might also need a light rain jacket.

A hat is essential as the sun is very strong, all year round, and especially if you are spending lots of time out on boats! If you’re planning on horse riding, remember to bring boots. Suntan lotion is difficult to find in Tofo so bring plenty with you as well as mosquito repellent for the nights.

Car Hire

There are car rental options in Tofo please ask our manager.

When to Visit

Any time is a good time to visit Tofo but there are some times to avoid if you’re uncomfortable with extreme heat – these are December until end of February/beginning of March. These can also be wet months. If you’re planning on diving, February can be a windy month creating choppy sea conditions, as can August.

The winter months (April to October) are great as the days are hot and sunny, nights are a little cooler but comfortable and the Humpback Whales are here. Summer months are great for warmer water diving and the Whale Sharks. Summer months are most popular and usually busier.

Tofinho beach is renowned for being the surf capital of Mozambique. The waves in Tofo are perfect for beginners and for the more experienced, go to Tofinho and Back Door beaches. If you don’t have your board you can rent one from The Waterworks Surf and Coffee Shop.

Fishing

There is some excellent fishing to be done in Tofinho, both from the shore or boat and the area is known for its good game fishing. You need to bring your own equipment if you are fishing from shore but there are various fishing charters available that will take you out by boat for a chance to catch the big ones. The headland at Tofinho is a favourite with both locals and visitors

Scuba Diving

The scuba diving in Tofo is truly world class. Conditions are good for diving all year round. The summer months are best for seeing whalesharks. Although they are here all year, November to March are the best months to see them and the water is warm – around 28 degrees centigrade.

"The Villas are ideally positioned overlooking the mangroves and the Indian ocean."
